Broderick Powers Generals to Doubleheader Sweep of Tompkins Cortland
HERKIMER, N.Y. – Alexis Broderick delivered a huge day at the plate, blasting three home runs and driving in seven runs, as the Herkimer Generals softball team swept Tompkins Cortland Community College in a home doubleheader Tuesday. The Generals rallied for a dramatic 10-9 walk-off victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 7-1 win in game two.
HERKIMER, N.Y. – Alexis Broderick delivered a huge day at the plate, blasting three home runs and driving in seven runs, as the Herkimer Generals softball team swept Tompkins Cortland Community College in a home doubleheader Tuesday. The Generals rallied for a dramatic 10-9 walk-off victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 7-1 win in game two.
Broderick finished the twin bill with six hits, including three doubles/home runs, while Olivia Perry earned both victories in the circle.
Game One: Herkimer 10, Tompkins Cortland 9
The Generals earned a thrilling walk-off win in the opener after Lauren Kelly delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the decisive run and cap a back-and-forth contest.
Herkimer struck first with four runs in the opening inning. Broderick doubled home the first run before Perry added a two-run single and Grace Neville followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 advantage.
The Generals extended the lead to 6-2 in the third inning as Autumn Roberts singled home a run and Emma Carlton added an RBI double.
Tompkins Cortland battled back, taking a 7-6 lead with a four-run fifth inning before Herkimer answered in the sixth. Broderick launched a two-run home run to left field to put the Generals back in front, and Neville added an RBI groundout to make it 9-7.
After the Panthers tied the game at nine with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, Herkimer had one final answer. Kelly lined a walk-off single to score the winning run and secure the 10-9 victory.
Perry earned the win after striking out an impressive 14 batters over seven innings. She allowed nine runs, only five of which were earned, while walking just one.
The Generals pounded out 15 hits. Broderick and Roberts each collected three hits, while Brianna Molter, Emma Powers, and Perry added two hits apiece.
Game Two: Herkimer 7, Tompkins Cortland 1
Broderick continued her offensive explosion in the nightcap, belting two home runs and driving in four runs to lead Herkimer to the sweep.
The sophomore got the Generals on the board in the first inning with an RBI double before Tompkins Cortland answered with a run in the bottom half to tie the game.
Broderick broke the tie in the fourth inning, crushing a two-run home run to right field that gave Herkimer a 3-1 lead.
The Generals added insurance runs late, highlighted by Broderick's second long ball of the game—a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning.
Perry turned in another complete-game performance, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five without issuing a walk.
Broderick finished with four RBIs and accounted for three extra-base hits in the victory, capping a remarkable day at the plate.
For the doubleheader, Broderick went 6-for-8 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, and seven total runs driven in, while Perry was outstanding in the circle, earning both wins and combining for 19 strikeouts over 14 innings as the Generals completed the season sweep of Tompkins Cortland.
