Generals come up short against Sharks
(Nicole Evans scored three goals in the first half of Saturday's game against Suffolk).
(Alexis Caughey had three goals and one assist against the Sharks Saturday).
HERKIMER, NY – After playing a superb second half against Mohawk Valley Thursday for their first win of the season, the Herkimer Generals women's lacrosse team seemed to run out of gas Saturday at Wehrum Stadium, allowing Suffolk County Community College to outscore them 6-3 in the final 24 minutes, winning the game 12-9 at the end of regulation.
Herkimer 1-1 (1-0) scored four goals in the first 16 minutes of play and led the Sharks by one (4-3) with 13:44 left in the first half. Scoring the first three goals for Herkimer was captain Nicole Evans (Cortland, NY). Her first came on an assist from Emilie Coufal (Syracuse, NY), while to other two came unassisted.
Freshman Alexis Caughey (Cortland, NY) was the other General to score, on another assist from Coufal, but the final 12 minutes of the half was owned by the Sharks, scoring three consecutive goals in the matter of five minutes, taking the 6-4 lead.
Courtney Canavan (Baldwinsville, NY) answered with 5:50 left in the first half, scoring on an assist from Caughey to make it 6-5 at intermission. Canavan finished the game with three goals.
In the second half, the Generals managed to tie the game at 6-6 with 24:26 left in regulation, but a 2-0 run and 3-0 run gave the Sharks all the cushion they needed to pull out the win in Herkimer's first home game of the season.
In the net for the Generals was Kristin Menge (Warwick, NY). Menge finished the game with 15 saves.
Herkimer's next game is tomorrow (3/30). Their second consecutive home games will be played against Onondaga Community College. The Lazers are ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. It will be a true test for the Generals, with game time starting at 1 p.m.
